As I write this I can’t believe we
only had 2 days in Texas – it felt like forever! The weather was cloudy and it
rained off and on. We were on I-10 all the way from El Paso to Beaumont. I
decided that if it weren’t for the trucks there would be no one on the road. We
saw very few campers either.
West Texas is quite deserted and is
very dry with lots of lovely brown vegetation. It was a real pleasure when we
finally got into the hill country with its green trees and yellow flowers along
the road side. There aren’t any Wal Marts in this part of Texas, so we spent
the first night in the city park in Junction TX. That was very nice, except the
town is so small that the locals seemed to find their entertainment in driving
through the park, around and around!
We bypassed San Antonio and attempted
to do the same in Houston. That took us two hours; we forgot to factor in rush
hour traffic and forever stop lights. By the time we got to Beaumont we were
ready to call it quits – both for driving and for Texas! Actually we have spent
quite a bit of time in Texas on other trips, so we will be back when we have
more time.
